AB celebrating City Government Week, unveiling ‘Government 101’

ABCityHallThe City of Atlantic Beach will join cities throughout the state in celebrating Florida City Government Week Oct. 22-28 with a variety of initiatives, including an essay contest and its first Atlantic Beach Government 101 overview and Q&A session.

Florida City Government Week, sponsored by the Florida League of Cities, is an annual weeklong celebration that raises awareness about the importance of municipal government and its daily impact on residents. Because city government is the government closest to most citizens, and the one with the most direct daily impact upon its residents, it is important that residents understand how their city operates, the services it provides, and the importance of their active involvement. The League of Cities is the official organization of Florida’s municipal governments the City Government Week theme is “My CityCityGovernmentWeekLogo: I’m Part of It, I’m Proud of It”.

“In planning our first-ever city government class for citizens, we encourage our residents to learn more about the many services that our local government provides. After all, it is here at the local level that folks have the opportunity to be closest to their government and their elected officials,” said Atlantic Beach Mayor Ellen Glasser. “We hope this effort, which is part of Florida City Government Week, will be informative and lead to a more engaged citizenry in the future.

Here are Atlantic Beach’s 2018 Florida City Government Week initiatives:

  • City Government Week proclamation. At the City Commission meeting on Oct. 22, Mayor Glasser will proclaim Oct. 22-28 as Florida City Government Week in Atlantic Beach and encourage all citizens, city government officials and employees to participate in events that recognize and celebrate local government.
  • “If I Were Mayor” essay contest. Atlantic Beach schoolchildren will be encouraged to share their thoughts on paper about public service and community leadership. The contest kicks off Oct. 22 and the entry deadline is Nov. 30. For information, email or call (904) 247-5804
  • Atlantic Beach Government 101. What does it take to run a city? What do the city departments do? What is the council-manager form of government? The City of Atlantic Beach is unveiling an ongoing program to encourage residents to learn the answers to these questions -- and to ask plenty of questions of their own. This will be done three ways:
  • Atlantic Beach Government 101 Overview and Q&A. The first class will be held from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 24, at City Hall. Future classes will be announced soon. Reservations for the Oct. 24 class are requested by Oct. 23 by emailing or calling (904) 247-5804.
  • Atlantic Beach Government 101 Speaker’s Bureau. The City is unveiling a new program that makes city leaders available to speak to school classrooms, student government associations, civic organizations and other groups upon request. To request a speaker, email or call (904) 247-5804.
  • Atlantic Beach Government 101 Website. During City Government Week, the City will unveil a web page that will serve as its Atlantic Beach Government 101 portal year-round. The website URL will be
  • Volunteer appreciation reception. On Oct. 25, the City of Atlantic Beach will honor volunteers who serve on various boards and committees with a reception at Adele Grage Cultural Center.
  • Facebook campaign. The City of Atlantic Beach will publish “Did You Know, AB?” a weeklong Facebook campaign with the hashtag #FLCityWeek, providing key facts and interesting tidbits about local government.
