About 25 community volunteers scoured Howell Park for invasive air potatoes Saturday, Feb. 29, during Atlantic Beach’s 2020 Weed Wrangle. Air potato vines and other invasive species originate from other continents and have adverse impacts on the ecology. Many of these problem non-natives have nothing to keep them in check since there’s nothing that eats or preys on them in their “new world.” The Weed Wrangle was a project of the statewide Florida Invasive Species Partnership. In addition to removing about 420 pounds of air potatoes, the volunteers removed a large amount of litter from the park. Also during the event, the advocacy group Friends of Howell Park gained 13 new members. For information about Friends of Howell Park, email email@example.com.
