Beach renourishment in Atlantic Beach is part of the federally authorized Duval County Shore Protection Project (SPP) administered by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers with the City of Jacksonville serving as the local sponsor. The next beach renourishment and dune replenishment project is slated for spring 2024.
The Duval County SPP was authorized for 50 years and was originally set to expire in 2028. However, the 2022 federal Water Resources Development Act allows for an additional 12 years of project eligibility. The expiration date of the Duval County SPP is now 2040. This means that the federal government, in partnership with the State of Florida and the City of Jacksonville, is committed to maintaining our beach with periodic renourishment activities for at least the next 17 years without additional congressional authorization.
