A City of Atlantic Beach contractor’s asphalt milling and resurfacing project is continuing. Lewis Street, West Ninth Street, Sea Oats Drive, Selva Marina Drive, DeWees Avenue, Coquina Drive, Coral Street and Shell Street are completed.
Paving on East Coast Drive is scheduled to be completed Sept. 15. Milling is expected begin on 10th Street on Sept. 15, and paving is expected to be completed on Sept. 16 or 18. That will wrap up the current milling-and-paving program.
Asphalt milling is the process of removing a portion of the existing pavement surface to help restore it to a uniform texture prior to resurfacing. It is anticipated that the entire asphalt milling and resurfacing program will be completed in about two weeks.
Asphalt milling can be a noisy and disruptive process that is necessary to maintain the integrity of the pavement. The benefits of milling ahead of resurfacing include:
- Improved safety: Smoother pavement reduces the risk of accidents.
- Increased longevity: Milling can extend the life of the pavement by removing any weak or damaged areas.
- Reduced environmental impact: The removed asphalt can be recycled, which reduces the need for virgin materials.
