King tides are exceptionally high tides that occur when the orbits and alignment of the Earth, moon and sun combine to produce the greatest tidal range of the year. King tides typically occur several times per year and bring unusually high water levels. We typically expect some local tidal flooding in low lying areas and impacts to the performance of our drainage system during the highest of these tides. This year, higher than normal expected tides are predicted to occur:
September 7th – 11th
September 17th – 21st
October 5th – 12th
November 3rd – 9th
December 2nd – 7th.
The highest of these tides will be the October, November and December king tides. Bear in mind that if these occur during periods of heavy rains or a northeaster, tide heights could be substantially higher than predicted.
