Improving Safety for Cyclists on Beach Avenue

Home Posted on January 28, 2025

The City of Atlantic Beach has begun implementing a plan to improve safety for cyclists on Beach Avenue by allowing two-way bicycle traffic on this one-way road.

 What's Changing:

  • New Signage:
    1. Existing "One-Way" signs are being removed.
    2. New signs are being installed indicating "One-Way - Except Bicycles."
    3. "Yield" signs are being installed to ensure that southbound bicyclists and pedestrians yield to all other traffic, including motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians who are turning onto, off of, or crossing Beach Avenue.
    4. Street name signs will be standardized for better visibility.
  • Improved Visibility:
    1. New signs will be mounted on wing brackets for better visibility to motorists and cyclists.

Why This Change?

This initiative aims to:

  • Enhance Safety: Provide a safer, convenient route for cyclists.
  • Promote Cycling: Encourage more residents and visitors to utilize bicycles as a mode of transportation.

FAQ

  • Who has the right-of-way when not turning onto, off of, or crossing Beach Avenue? If vehicles are traveling north and bikes are traveling south, neither has to yield the right-of-way to the other because no one is turning into the path of the other; there is no conflict.
